FOUR CORNERS

" As a sometimes educational consultant, I am on occasion invited to distant locations to provide educational opportunities for a unique clientele of individuals desirous of my particular educational speciality. It was on such a trip that I spent a week in Las Vegas and other places in Nevada.

I flew from Tennessee to Nevada on Southwest Airlines. The flight attendants wore tennis shoes with red, white, and blue dots on them; white T-shirts with a large flight patch guarding their hearts; and tacky, brown shorts. The orange juice they passed to customers contained a small napkin that read, "FLY SOUTHWEST JUST SAY WHEN."

Before the plane took off, the crew did a rap-dance -- reminiscence of Indians on the warpath -- and they sang a loud, boisterous song, describing the proper way to wear seat belts. I sub-consciously found myself tightening mine after the song.

TIDBITS

Dear Dan - My favorite site is for my new home town, Portland, Oregon. it's at http://www.travelportland.com. it's a really cool, well-laid out site with great information. (Deanna Schindler)

Please have a look at my Africa for Visitors site on About.com http://www.goafrica.about.com Marion Boddy-Evans, Africa for Visitors Guide.

Hello Dan - This summer I'm planning a trip to Alaska and I thought maybe you'd like to know about it. I have also recently put in place some skeletal html files to be filled in later as I proceed on my Alaska trip, writing daily diaries and including photos. My web site is http://www.yelavich.com. For those just interested in the Alaska trip, they could bookmark http://www.yelavich.com/rt99root.htm.

I'm certainly looking forward to my trip and hopefully it will be a good one, where I can share my travel experiences with others. Unlike my 1997 trip, where I preplanned most things, the Alaska trip will be more like "going with the wind". I will not prebook anything, allowing me to stay longer where I want, or travel further on any given day. We'll see how it goes. I plan to stay at motels/hotels where they're available, but I will be taking some camping gear with me and 'roughing' it if that's the case. (Bob Yelavich)

Hello - I have a website full of practical and non-commercial info for travellers on more then 20 countries: SE Asia, Central America, Middle East and Mali. The site has been awarded as best Belgian travel site 1998. It gets updated almost daily, and new destinations are added once monthly. Visit http://www.1000traveltips.org , the website for independent travellers. Koen De Boeck

QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

"He looked at his own Soul with a Telescope. What seemed all irregular, he saw and shewed to be beautiful Constellations; and he added to the Consciousness hidden worlds within worlds."

ANOTHER TRAVEL WRITER WHO WILL NOT BORE YOU !!!!!

Edward Abbey

"About ten years ago I took a job as a seasonal park ranger in a place called Arches National Monument near the little town of Moab in southeast Utah. Why I went there no longer matters; what I found there is the subject of this book. My job began on the first of April and ended on the last day of September. I liked the work and the canyon country and returned the following year for a second season. I would have returned the third year too and each year thereafter but unfortunately for the Arches, a primitive place when I first went there, was developed and improved so well that I had to leave." Edward Abbey - The introduction to Desert Solitaire.

Edward Abbey is the author of Desert Solitaire, one of the great travel books of all time.

The Mountain refers to the new book, Running to the Mountain, by Jon Katz. Jon has become a personal friend through our e-mail responses and our similar interest in Thomas Merton. Katz book was reviewed in February in USA Today and numerous other magazines. It describes a trip he took to a mountain cabin on the edge of New York. His experiences there rival the works of Thoreau and Walden and, in a sense, are reminders of Traveling with Charlie by John Steinbeck.

I did a lengthy review of Running to the Mountain. Check it out!
